Kraze road to US Open Cup an uphill climb

datePosted on 08:53, May 30th, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

Mississippi Brilla beat the Nashville Metros 3-0 last night, putting their goal differential at +9.

I’m not sure yet how PDL US Open Cup tiebreakers work, so to be sure, Central Florida Kraze would have to beat Schulz Academy F.C. in Fort Lauderdale tomorrow by at least three goals. They might get by with a two-goal wins, but not knowing the tiebreakers, I’m not sure.

Central Florida Kraze is on its way into the PDL season, and are kicking butt, currently 2-0-1 (2 wins, 1 tie) through three games.

In their season opener on May 16, they went to Fort Lauderdale to take on Schulz Academy FC, and won the game, 3-1, at Florida Atlantic University. Kraze goals scored by Johnny Mendoza, Sergei Raad and Gonzalo de Mujica.

Next, they opened their home schedule on May 23 at a new, closer-to-town stadium, Showalter Field in Winter Park, home of Winter Park High School athletics. Their first game was a 1-1 draw with Mississippi Brilla. John Bayron Sosa got the only goal for the Kraze on a penalty kick at 52′.

Next, just Thursday night. the Kraze dished out a 5-0 mauling of the Atlanta Blackhawks. Mendoza, Sosa, Raad, de Mujica and Adam New all got goals.

Goalkeeper Wesley Giachetti has already amassed 29 saves on 31 shots on target through three games (8, 11 and 10 saves, respectively, in each game).

Next up, the Kraze play Memorial Day returning to Schulz Academy F.C. That game will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in their cricket stadium. They will return to Showalter Field on June 5 to face the Bradenton Academics. Game time is 7pm.

A win on Memorial Day might earn the Kraze a berth in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the national cup tournament, where they face Division 2 and MLS teams for a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. It’s dependent on what Mississippi Brilla does tonight in their last of four USOC qualifiers hosting the Nashville Metros. Kraze and Brilla have the exact same record (2-0-1), but Kraze is up on goal differential (+7, compared to Brilla’s +6).

Obviously a tie or loss by Brilla tonight means we control our own destiny. I will keep you informed.

Tuskers announce defensive coaching staff

datePosted on 08:54, May 29th, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

Yesterday, the Florida Tuskers announced their defensive coaching staff.

Bill Bradley (the former NFL coach, not the basketball player and former Senator) will return as the secondary (CB/safety) coach. Al Roberts will return as special teams coach.

New hires include Jim Lanford as special teams assistant, Kerry Lochlin as DL coach, and Fred Pagac as defensive quality control coach.

The UFL is holding a poll of where fans want to hold the 2010 UFL Championship Game.

Omaha has some serious meat puppetry going on. They currently have 59% of the vote. Orlando is second at 16%.

Surely we don’t want the UFL Championship Game to be held in a baseball stadium, do we?

Go to the UFL website, register (or connect with Facebook), and vote for Orlando in the poll.

(Definition: meat puppetry is organizing people to spam a poll to get a desired result. It’s what the Phillies do with the MLB All Star Game vote.)

Predators fall to Tampa Bay

datePosted on 08:40, May 29th, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

It’s still not easy. The Orlando Predators fell at home to the Tampa Bay Storm, 62-50.

The Preds attempted a furious comeback in the 4th quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points before Tampa Bay slammed the door shut.

Unfortunately, arenafootball.com’s stats pages don’t work, so I can’t give you any. I need to fax in my press credentials so I can count them myself.

Apparently, Michael Jordan likes UCF.

His younger son, Marcus, already plays here. Now his older son, Jeffrey, is transferring to UCF from Illinois. A point guard, he will sit out next year, then play his senior year in 2011-12.

In addition, Josh Crittle is transferring in from Oregon. A power forward, he will also sit out next year, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Latest from the Florida Tuskers…

Yesterday, head coach Jay Gruden has announced his 2010 coaching staff. Among them is WR coach Ike Hilliard. Hilliard is well-known in these parts for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a volunteer assistant for the Tuskers last year.

Joining him will be TE coach Robert McFarland, a former assistant at UCF, and RB coach Kurt Beathard, son of Super Bowl-winning NFL GM Bobby Beathard and recently coaching for Illinois.

Bill Laveroni will return as the OL coach, with Jerry Sisemore as his assistant, and James McPherson as offensive quality control coach.

The day before, Gruden promoted Chuck Bresnahan from linebacker coach to defensive coordinator. Brett Munsey, an employee of Gruden’s with the Predators, was also hired as director of player personnel.

Last week, the Tuskers announced the nature of the $10 million interim improvements to the Citrus Bowl.

Currently under construction are four new permanent concession stands with full kitchens and eight new bathrooms, doubling our bathroom capacity and vastly improving concession options. There will also be aesthetic improvements both inside and out, including massive banners to cover a lot of the rusty steel infrastructure.

The biggest change, of course, will be the artificial turf installation. Allegedly, the city is still negotiating the type of turf to be installed.

Predators outduel Iron, ruin Harrell's record night

datePosted on 06:49, May 23rd, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

The Orlando Predators did something that’s been completely foreign to them thus far this year: be in a game from start to finish.

They did it Friday night when they jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead, then outdueled the Milwaukee Iron down the stretch, ultimately winning, 58-54.

In doing so, they ruined a special night for Iron wide receiver Damian Harrell. Already the leader in career reception yards (Barry Wagner is 2nd) and receiving TDs, he passed Lawrence Samuels on the total receptions list with 1,027. He now has the trifecta of WR career records in the Arena Football League.

Next up for the Preds: the War on I-4 comes to NFL Network. Orlando will host the Tampa Bay Storm this Friday.

Tuskers forming dance team; tryouts June 5

datePosted on 16:39, May 21st, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

Sorry I’ve been quiet. Was still fully recovering from an illness.

I got a press release today from the Florida Tuskers. Apparently, they are forming a Dance Team to cheer the team on this coming season.

Tryouts will be Saturday, June 5, and will be held at the Vibe Dance Studio. That’s on Semoran Blvd. (SR 436) at Hanging Moss Road, roughly half-way between SR 50 and University Blvd. on the northbound side. The address is 5100 Hanging Moss Rd., Suite 570. Registration begins at 9:30am, and the tryouts will begin at 10:30am. Registration is $25 per person.

Participants are expected to wear a dance top and shorts with athletic shoes, and need to bring a head shot and a resume (non-returnable). They will also need to print out the waiver available on the link above, fill it out and bring it with them to the tryouts.

Ladies who impress at the tryouts will participate in a public final performance on Saturday, June 19, at Orlando Fashion Square Mall (SR 50 and Maguire Blvd.) at 6:00pm.

Predators on a roll in Alabama

datePosted on 11:14, May 16th, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

The Orlando Predators have the good kind of streak going now. They beat the Alabama Vipers, 48-31.

From what little info I have, only a short blurb on a Huntsville TV station’s website, we outscored them 38-7 in the second half. Talking about falling flat.

Yes, the lack of news is getting old.

This Friday, the Predators return home to host the Milwaukee Iron. Game time is 7:30pm EDT.

Official: Lingerie Football League coming to Orlando

datePosted on 10:47, May 13th, 2010 by Jeff Leadbeater

As I reported at the beginning of the year, the Lingerie Football League, a novelty indoor football league played by scantily-clad but well-padded (literally, I mean) women, is expanding to Orlando for their 2010-11 season.

Recently they announced the name of the Orlando franchise: the Orlando Fantasy.

The head coach is a very familiar name for Predators fans: quarterback Ben Bennett. He, along with WR Barry Wagner, engineered the Miracle Minute in 1992, and led the Preds to three ArenaBowl appearances. He has since been a big coach in af2, most recently of the Austin Wranglers. He won the ArenaCup coaching the Florida Firecats in 2004.

The team has already had its spring mini-camps, and has full social networking with Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.

Games will be very rare, as the league only plays one game per week throughout the season. The Fantasy will play four Eastern Conference games, 2 at home and 2 away. The home games for the Fantasy will be on September 24 against Tampa Breeze, and October 29 against Miami Caliente. Their away games will be November 5 at Baltimore Charm, and December 10 at Philadelphia Passion. All game times are 9pm ET.

Tickets go on sale on June 1. The schedule says Amway Center will be the venue, but the September date would kind’ve chaffe with the construction schedule. (The first Magic home preseason game is October 10.) I will keep you informed as more data becomes available.
